Smita Bellur is India’s first female Hindustani vocalist to have been accepted into a lineage of traditional qawwals. This remarkable training and her deep engagement with mysticism and Khayal form classical music has brought profound humanity and easy access to the spiritual poetry of the sub-continent – Nirguni, Bhakti, Sufi, Veerashaiva, and Haridasa traditions dating back to the 12th century. Singing mellifluously Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, and Punjabi, she has connected with audiences across the subcontinent on radio, TV, inter-faith harmony gatherings, as well as music festivals across the globe.
